To distribute these fraudulent stamp papers, Telgi put up a wide network of agents throughout India. He even succeeded in paying off government employees to ignore his criminal acts. The Indian exchequer is thought to have lost 200 billion Indian Rupees as a result of the scandal.
When the authorities detained Telgi in connection with a case of fraudulent stamp papers in Pune in 2003, the scam came to light. Following Telgi’s arrest, the scope of the fraud and the involvement of numerous well-known people, including politicians and government officials, were made public.
Telgi’s associates were also detained and charged during the course of the scam investigation, which lasted for several years. Telgi was found guilty and given a 30-year prison term in 2007. He passed away in 2017 while still incarcerated.
